Within the framework of the EUTOPIA Science and Innovation Fellowship Programme, monthly fellow’s seminars will take place, in which the 40 researchers enrolled in the two cohorts will in turn present their research projects.
We are therefore delighted to invite you to the upcoming EUTOPIA-SIF Fellows Seminar, on Thursday 27 March, 13:00-14:30 CET.
The seminar will be held on Zoom: https://cyu-fr.zoom.us/j/92790060737?pwd=Qt4flc1wroPyjNo7Kj9GN1nt0IOMA9.1
The event will be open at the EUTOPIA level, please disseminate it to the relevant people it can interest.

| Project Title | Predicting Reaction Mechanisms with Quantum Chemical Reactivity Descriptors: How far can Machine Learning take us? | |
| Abstract | Accurate solution of the Schrodinger equation for the electrons in molecules would vastly enhance our capability for chemical discovery, but associated computational cost makes this prohibitive. The central promise of machine learning is, by exploiting statistical learning of the properties, we might leap-frog over the worst bottlenecks in this process. In this seminar, I will begin by discussing conceptual reactivity descriptors, which have played crucial role in advancing our understanding of complex chemical processes over the years. I will then highlight our recent efforts in boosting the automated reaction discovery by training a ML model to infer these conceptual descriptors. | |

| Project Title | Structure, Dynamics, and Interactions of Human Mitochondrial RNA Polymerase | |
| Abstract | Almost all the energy our cells need to survive is produced by mitochondria, the cell’s powerhouses. Mitochondria have a separate genome (mtDNA) encoding vital proteins required for producing energy through mitochondrial respiration. To synthesise these proteins, this mitochondrial genome must first be encoded as mRNA in the process of transcription. To meet the metabolic requirements of the cell, this process must be tightly regulated, and dysregulation is present in several human diseases. In humans, mitochondrial transcription is carried out by a large molecular machine, the mitochondrial RNA polymerase (mtRNAP). Recent studies have provided rich structural details of the mechanism of transcription, but there are major outstanding questions on how transcription is regulated. This project will initiate NMR spectroscopy studies on mtRNAP to provide an atomic level understanding its structure and dynamics. These measurements will be complemented with the integration of other techniques to help to address key questions on the regulation of mtDNA expression in human mitochondria. | |

| Project Title | Overcoming Frontiers – In search of new artistic practices going beyond the national status quo | |
| Abstract | What does it mean to live (on) a frontier? How do cross-border communities negotiate their recent memories of oppression and division through culture, and how are cultural events shaped by the presence of a frontier? Simultaneously, how can we build new cultural practices, overcoming the ethno-nationalist values of the past century, democratising and decentring the conversation from the colonial structures that western narratives are still upholding? These are the questions I intend to explore, comparing what happens when culture is confronted by a frontier and what new ways can be found to ‘bypass’ division lines that go beyond geopolitics. | |
