Project Title Ethnic minorities against mining multinationals: Defending endangered ecocultural heritage in two European borderlands
Abstract The destruction of indigenous peoples’ native environments worldwide is a topic that has attracted the attention of both researchers and the media. Nevertheless, little is known about the fate of autochthonous minority groups’ ecologies in Europe. A comparative focus on the consequences of mining in Lusatia, Germany and Timok Valley, Serbia, inhabited by the Sorbian and Vlach ethnic minorities respectively, intends to demonstrate the harmfulness of extractive activities to both the natural environment and cultural and linguistic diversity. To this aim, the communities’ struggles for the preservation of the local ecocultural heritage will be analyzed through ethnographic and sociolinguistic methods.
13:25 – 13:30 Q&A

13:30 – 13:50 Fellow Presentation
Speaker Marco Vianna-Franco (Cy Cergy Paris University)
Project Title Energetics in Central European Economic Thought
Abstract The implications to economic theory-making of the rise of thermodynamics during the 19th century has only been partially covered as a research subject in the history of economic thought. Within German-speaking scholarship, there is a long intellectual tradition bridging such fields in a quest to understand how biophysical laws and constraints can be incorporated into economic reasoning. The objective of the seminar is thus to present the assimilation of energetics into currents of economic thinking in Central Europe (1880s-1930s). It focuses on key questions such as economic value, resource accounting, and social reform in in the works of different authors, shedding light on their attempts to intertwine the natural and social sciences.
