| Project Title | DNA interaction with metallodrugs | |
| Abstract | Cancer is responsible for more than 13% of deaths worldwide; by 2030 there will be 21.4 million cases/year and platinum drugs are used in about 50% of chemotherapy. Platinum drugs target DNA and stop its replication, leading to cell death. However, the high toxicity associated with these drugs arises from their lack of selectivity towards cancerous and normal cells.
New metallodrugs with targeted modes of action are one way to circumvent platinum resistance and the lack of selectivity. In this presentation, I will discuss the use of photoactive transition metal (photosensitizers, PS) and their interactions with DNA as well as the possible mechanism of action of this PS. Also, I will discuss the use of synchrotron x-rays to image lung cancer cells after drug treatment. |

| Project Title | Bivalves elucidate the story of changing environment | |
| Abstract | Morphology of bivalves is a key element for palaeontologists to determine the mode of life and habitat of the organism. Cambay, an early Eocene (47-56 Ma) deposition in the western coast of the Indian subcontinent houses 36 different species of bivalvia. Ecological study based on their morphology indicates a changing environment from freshwater dominated lagoon to shallow marine restricted environments. Temperature fluctuations within that short timespan have left prominent morphological imprints on the bivalves as well. A very peculiar species of oyster from that region became monogamous in response to global warming. | |

| Project Title | Socially Assistive Robot Partners as Digitized Cognitive Interventions | |
| Abstract | Worldwide cases of dementia are growing every year. Cognitive intervention therapies can help delay the loss of cognitive functions in persons with mild cognitive impairment (a pre-dementia stage). Digitized versions of cognitive therapy e.g. through social robots, can help address constraints of traditional interventions, such as accessibility, scalability, and enjoyment. Being able to personalize therapies through these robots to a user’s emotional states can further help promote the relevance of therapies, long-term engagement and motivation, and therefore improving the effectiveness of therapies that can potentially delay or stop the onset of dementia altogether. In this talk, I will discuss my project looking at how we can use emotional signals from users to personalise digitized cognitive therapies for persons with mild cognitive impairments, in an effort to improve the long-term effectiveness of digitized cognitive therapies. | |
