Within the framework of the EUTOPIA Science and Innovation Fellowship Programme we are delighted to invite you to the to the EUTOPIA-SIF Monthly Fellow Seminar, which will take place on Thursday 11 January 2024, 13:00-14:30 CET  and which you are all very welcome to attend.

Project Title Symmetric conformity functions make decision-making processes independent of the distribution of learning strategies
Abstract Two main procedures characterize the way in which individuals evaluate the qualities of the options in decision-making processes:  they either seek to evaluate their intrinsic qualities (individual learners), or they rely on the opinion of the others (social learners). For the latter, social experiments have suggested that the mathematical form of the probability of adopting  an option, called the conformity function, is symmetric. However, the literature includes models where social learners employ either symmetric or non-symmetric functions. We show that when symmetric conformity functions are considered, the form of the probability distribution of the individual strategies does not matter.
13:15 – 13:20 Q&A

Cohort 3 (2023-2025)
13:20 – 13:40 Fellow Presentation
Speaker Thomas Bilterys (University of Warwick)
Project Title Sleep problems in people with chronic pain: Adapting the sleep treatment
Abstract Both insomnia and chronic pain are very prevalent and highly disabling global health conditions with high societal cost. They frequently co-occur and have a bi-directional relation. Currently, there is little done in clinical practice to address sleep problems in the management of chronic pain. However, previous studies explored the use of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I, the recommended first-line treatment for insomnia) and show promising results in chronic pain patients but also revealed some limitations. This project aims to investigate the feasibility and effect of an adapted version of CBT-I which also considers the sleep-pain relationship.
13:40 – 13:45 Q&A
13:45 – 14:05 Fellow Presentation
Speaker Andreana Pastena (University of Warwick)
Project Title Navigating diversity: A comparative study of students’ experiences in two European universities
Abstract Due to migration flows, internationalization policies, and mobility programs, universities are becoming spaces of increasing cultural and linguistic diversity. Consequently, individuals have more opportunities to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and engage in multilingual communication. This project explores how ‘local’ and ‘international’ students navigate such spaces. The focus will be on students’ experiences with languages and intercultural peers at two high-quality European universities: one settled in an English monolingual context (UK), the other in a bilingual one (Catalonia). By comparing these two, the study aims to uncover both global and context-specific challenges of internationalized universities.
14:05 – 14:30 Q&A
