EUTOPIA-SIF Fellows Seminar

Dear Sir/Madam,

Within the framework of the EUTOPIA Science and Innovation Fellowship Programme, monthly fellow’s seminars will take place, in which the 40 researchers enrolled in the two cohorts will in turn present their research projects.

We are therefore delighted to invite you to the upcoming EUTOPIA-SIF Monthly Fellow Seminar, on Thursday 9 January, 13:00-14:30 CET.

.

The event will be open at the EUTOPIA level, please disseminate it to the relevant people it can interest.

The seminar will be held on Zoom: https://cyu-fr.zoom.us/j/92790060737?pwd=Qt4flc1wroPyjNo7Kj9GN1nt0IOMA9.1

Event Schedule:

13:00 – 13:05 Introduction
Cohort 3 (2023-2025)
13:05 – 13:15 Fellow Presentation
Speaker Nicola Peruffo  (University of Gothenborg)
Project Title Strong Coupling: where light and matter mix
Abstract A relevant property of the molecule is its ability to interact with light. For instance, plant leaves are green because they absorb red light, and reflect green light. Less known is that matter and light can interact so strongly that they cannot be regarded as separate entities but form a hybrid light-matter material. This phenomenon is called strong coupling. The strong coupling between light and molecules can occur only if the light is trapped in the same space where the molecules lie. However, since there are several ways to trap the light, it is difficult to understand how the structure of the materials influences their overall properties. My EUTOPIA-SIF fellowship is thus devoted to connecting structure to properties and giving a more cohesive perspective in this field.
13:15 – 13:25 Q&A

Cohort 4 (2024-2026)
13:25 – 13:45 Fellow Presentation
Speaker Sergio Posada Pérez (Vrije Universiteit Brussels)
Project Title Bridging Science and Society: Computational Discovery of Catalysts for a Sustainable Future
Abstract The path to a sustainable future demands innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions and secure energy independence. This talk explores the urgent need for green technologies, focusing on the economic, political, and environmental challenges posed by CO2 emissions and ammonia production. We will discuss the global implications of these issues before delving into the scientific quest for advanced catalysts. Specifically, the presentation will highlight how computational methods are used to discover single-atom catalysts supported on carbon nitrides, aiming to revolutionize CO2 conversion and ammonia synthesis. This interdisciplinary approach bridges science and society in the fight against climate change.
13:45 – 13:55 Q&A
13:55 – 14:05 Fellow Presentation
Speaker Abdallah Ali (University of Ljubljana)
Project Title Harnessing Waste Heat for Clean Energy and Water Co-production: A Novel Approach to CPV Cooling and Desalination
Abstract Globally, billions face water scarcity, with nearly 30% of the EU experiencing severe shortages. In arid regions like Egypt, where 93% of the land remains undeveloped, access to clean water and energy is a pressing challenge. This presentation introduces an innovative solution that combines concentrated photovoltaics (CPVs) with an evaporative-based desalination system to address these issues. By efficiently removing heat from CPV systems, the approach ensures stable electricity generation while simultaneously producing freshwater. The system repurposes low-grade waste heat from air-conditioning systems, improving energy efficiency and guaranteeing continuous desalination. This dual-purpose design enhances CPV performance, extends the system lifespan, and contributes to global sustainability goals, including clean water and affordable energy.
14:05 – 14:15 Q&A
14:15 – 14:30 Breakout rooms
