Within the framework of the EUTOPIA Science and Innovation Fellowship Programme we are delighted to invite you to the to the EUTOPIA-SIF Monthly Fellow Seminar, which will take place on Thursday 22nd June 2023, 13:00-14:30 CET and which you are all very welcome to attend.
The event will be open at the EUTOPIA level.
The seminar will be held on Zoom: https://cyu-fr.zoom.us/j/93189480027

Project Title | Cell proliferation and differentiation in hindbrain development: a 4D perspective
Abstract | The comprehension of how the brain is built and how its cell diversity is established during embryogenesis is key to understanding its function. Brain formation requires a balance between cell proliferation (division to increase cell numbers) and cell differentiation (acquisition of a cell’s final, specific and specialized characteristics), to generate the correct number of neurons, at the right place and time. This can be assessed by studying cell lineages.
We use zebrafish to study hindbrain cell lineages, live and in 4D. This entails following individual cells as they divide, migrate and differentiate. Likewise, cellular and molecular characterization of neuronal lineages is essential to understand their behavior and how they generate diverse neuron circuits. |

Project Title | Socially Assistive Robot Partners for Digitized Cognitive Interventions (SARP-DCI)
Abstract | Global rates of dementia are on the rise. Whilst dementia cannot be treated, intervention is possible at a pre-dementia stage known as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Interventions at this stage can delay and even prevent dementia altogether. However, traditional approaches to therapies suffer from significant issues related to motivation, accessibility, idiosyncrasy, scalability, and adherence—ultimately affecting the efficacy of treatments—and are only becoming more prominent with time. In this talk, I will discuss my project which investigates how we can utilise a personalised, social robot partner to help deliver digitized therapies in order to overcome constraints of traditional cognitive therapies and improve the outcomes of these therapies for persons with MCI.

Project Title | Initial Study on Mushrooms as New Sources of Levodopa (L-Dopa) For Parkinson’s Treatment
Abstract | Parkinson’s is a neurogenerative disorder. Levodopa (L-DOPA) is used as a common antiparkinson agent. However, L-DOPA medication often causes some mild to severe side effects. In addition, Levodopa medication is a financial burden for those from low-income or middle-income countries due to the limited supply.
As L-DOPA is one of the precursors of melanin and melanin is commonly found in the mature fruiting bodies of some fungi. Thus, we hypothesize that those melanin-producing mushrooms would also produce L-DOPA at certain stages in their life cycles. This talk summarizes our initial findings in L-DOPA production of different fungal species. |
