Who is this programme for?

Within the second-cycle Master’s programme in Special and Rehabilitation Pedagogy, students choose one of the following specialisations:

  • Special Developmental and Learning Difficulties
  • Deaf Education (Tiflopedagogy) and Specific Learning Difficulties

The programme is designed to build upon and deepen the knowledge and skills for working with individuals with special needs that were acquired during the first-cycle studies.

Our legislation (the Act on the Orientation of Children with Special Needs) defines groups of individuals who, during their development or later in life, require certain forms of support or adjustments intended to enable them to develop their potential to the greatest possible extent.

These groups include:

  • Children with intellectual disabilities,
  • Blind and visually impaired children or children with visual impairments,
  • Deaf and hard-of-hearing children,
  • Children with speech and language disorders,
  • Children with physical disabilities,
  • Children with chronic illnesses,
  • Children with deficits in specific areas of learning,
  • Children with autistic disorders, and
  • Children with emotional and behavioural disorders.

Individuals with special needs require different types and levels of support, and the duration of support also varies – for some, it is only for a short period, while for others, it lasts a lifetime.

Within the Special and rehabilitation pedagogy programme, you will be trained to work with:

  • Individuals with intellectual disabilities;
  • Individuals with physical disabilities;
  • Individuals with chronic illnesses;
  • Individuals with autistic disorders;
  • Individuals with learning difficulties.

What is study like?

Students in the Special and rehabilitation pedagogy programme will, during their education, acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in developing process-oriented and developmental special pedagogical and rehabilitation diagnostics. You will learn how to coordinate and implement in-depth interdisciplinary identification and assessment of the functioning of individuals with various special needs, engage in critical analysis and monitoring in the field of developmental and process diagnostics, and collaborate in solving professional challenges in the field of Special and Rehabilitation Pedagogy, among other skills.

Programme objectives

The primary objectives of the second-cycle studies in Special and rehabilitation pedagogy (hereinafter SRP) are to deepen the knowledge and skills in both the fundamental and applied disciplines of SRP, taking into account its interdisciplinary nature.

These competencies enable graduates to:

  • Independently practice as special and rehabilitation pedagogues,
  • Continue their studies at the third cycle (doctoral studies),
  • Engage in various forms of continuous professional development.

Students in the SRP programme will be trained to critically monitor and reflect on the latest developments in theory and practice, as well as to seek new sources of knowledge using scientific research methods to solve complex problems in the field of SRP.

Admission requirements

Applicants for the specialisations Special Developmental and Learning Difficulties and Deaf Education (Tiflopedagogy) and Specific Learning Difficulties must have completed a first-cycle study programme totaling 240 ECTS credits or a university-level study programme accepted before 11 June 2004 in the relevant professional field of Special and Rehabilitation Pedagogy. Detailed admission requirements are provided in the presentation brochure.

Criteria and procedure for candidate selection in case of limited admissions

  • 60%: Average grade from the first-cycle studies
  • 10%: Grade for the diploma thesis or other form of study completion
  • 30%: An elective exam in which the candidate demonstrates knowledge and familiarity with the content of the chosen specialisation

If the candidate did not complete a diploma or other form of study completion during the previous studies, the average grade from the first-cycle studies will be considered at 70%.

Within the Special and Rehabilitation Pedagogy programme, I not only acquired extensive knowledge, skills, and experience in the field of special pedagogy, but I also developed personally and became more confident and holistically prepared for work in any field I may encounter in the future.
