URBAN KORDEŠ is professor of cognitive science and first-person research at the University of Ljubljana where he is currently serving as head of the cognitive science program. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematical physics and doctorate in philosophy of cognitive science. His research interests include in-depth empirical phenomenological research, neurophenomenology, second-order cybernetics, collaborative knowledge creation, as well as epistemic and methodological issues in the research of non-trivial systems.
Urban believes that training in the skill of introspection and subsequent first-person reporting should become one of the essential cognitive science research tools. He is leading the research team, nicknamed » the Observatory«, aiming at the systematic practice and critical examination of reflection.
His methodological efforts are focused to the systems where the approximation of the independent observer is impossible – the act of observation intrinsically determines the results. There are at least two distinct areas of research that fit such description: examination of lived experience and quantum mechanics. Urban believes that the two areas could (to some degree) share methodological and epistemological insights.
