1. GENERAL INFORMATION
The mathematics department was organized as an independent unit of the Faculty of Education in 1991, the same year the Pedagogical Academy was renamed into Faculty of Education. In addition to full-time faculty, the department occasionally has visiting professors from other faculties and universities, also from abroad.
The department covers all subjects related to mathematics for two-subject courses in which mathematics is either the main or the secondary subject of study. The department also organizes continuing education and part-time studies. The following two-subject courses are offered:
mathematics and physics
mathematics and technical education
mathematics and computer science
The coursework in mathematics is standard for the first two years of studies (algebra, analysis), while during the last two years, greater emphasis is placed on options in mathematics (topics in algebra, analysis, geometry, topology, discrete mathematics, the teaching of mathematics, the history of mathematics). Work is done through lectures, seminars and problem sessions which increasingly include the use of computers.
Students actively participate in the problem sessions, seminars and teacher-training sessions, with this participation having a bearing on the final grade. Examinations are as a rule carried throughout during the term (tests, seminar papers and similar).
The department is also responsible for the mathematics portions of other programs of study (preschool and primary education).
The department is also engaged in broad research with international collaboration.
